Recently a UK shopkeeper had her laptop stolen. Heartbreakingly for Jackie Dannat, the only copies of treasured photos of her deceased sister were on that laptop.

“They have taken away all the memories that I had, which were very few,” she said.

Jackie had shut up shop for a few minutes to enjoy a coffee break but when she returned she found her doors open and her computer gone. The thieves had also tried to open the till.

Jackie said: “I hadn’t seen my sister since we were children and I found out in April this year that she had brain cancer. I made arrangements to go see her and I had saved the photos taken onto a USB memory stick but I had to transfer them onto my laptop when I needed space on the USB.

“Gutted is not the word – they were the only photographs I’ve got,” said Jackie.

Thieves apparently love laptops and why not? They are portable, expensive, easy to hide, and they are full of confidential information.

Hundreds of thousands of laptops get stolen in the U.S. every year, and millions get stolen around the world.

Jackie Dannat’s heartbreak is palpable, and the chances of her recovering the lost pictures are unhappily very small. Hopefully the police will track down the laptop, or the culprit will surrender it.

Most of us, like Jackie, have items we treasure. They may not be expensive or worth anything at all to anyone else, but we hold them precious. I have kept birthday cards from my grandmother, my mother’s report cards, my father’s birth certificate complete with typo, and so much more. A lot of these treasures are fragile and could be easily lost or destroyed. As well, I have a sibling who covets them.

The solution I found was to scan these items and to turn them into digital documents. One benefit of doing this was being able to share a copy of the originals with my sibling. And another major benefit was being able to upload my treasures for safekeeping with CollectionMine’s online data backup software. If anything happens to the originals — burglary, fire, theft, vandalism, or plain old carelessness, I am assured that the digital version is safe and retrievable.

All of my family photos are stored with CollectionMine. I am having a videotape of my sibling’s wedding converted to disk so that I shall forever be able to see and hear my dear departed parents. When the conversion is ready, I am uploading that irreplaceable keepsake on CollectionMine as well.

The best tip I can give you is to keep an updated backup of all your important data. If you have all of your files backed up, you’ll save yourself a lot of time and stress and heartbreak if anything ever does happen to your computer.

Try CollectionMine’s offsite data storage to store your own valuable documents. If you sign up now you get a 30 day free trial. It’s very affordable and very easy to use.
